Countryside house for Sale in front of Tagus River. CASAL RIBA TEJO

There are properties that impress through scale, and others that leave a lasting impression through place. Casal Riba Tejo belongs unmistakably to the latter. Set across 3.68 hectares above the Tagus River, this riverfront estate occupies one of the most privileged positions in central Portugal, where uninterrupted views, complete privacy and access to the river create an increasingly rare lifestyle. Built during the 1940s, the residence preserves the architectural language of the Ribatejo, with whitewashed façades, traditional red detailing, timber shutters and pitched roofs, remaining deeply connected to the landscape that has shaped it for generations.

The house unfolds across three levels, following the natural slope of the terrain. The ground floor welcomes visitors through a entrance hall and includes a bedroom, bathroom and pantry, while the first floor accommodates two spacious en suite bedrooms, complemented by additional storage areas. A licensed lower ground floor extension has been carefully integrated into the architecture, creating a generous open plan living room and kitchen, together with an additional bedroom and bathroom. Throughout the house, the Tagus River remains a constant presence, visible from the living areas, bedrooms, terraces and balconies, becoming an integral part of daily life rather than simply the property’s backdrop.

The building is therefore quite different from the more austere military architecture for which Elvas is famous. It represents the aristocratic residential architecture of 18th-century Elvas, when wealthy families expressed their status through urban palaces and solares.

The palace is especially interesting because it illustrates the intersection of three histories of Elvas: The military city, The aristocratic Melo families and Eighteenth-century aristocratic architecture. The building is locally described as a Palácio Pombalino, although its decorative language also has strong late-Baroque/Rococo characteristics.

The archives places the building in the history of the Melo e Lacerda family of Elvas, described as a family of military men who held morgados (entailed estates) in the Alentejo.

This is consistent with independent genealogical and archival evidence. The Anuário da Nobreza de Portugal specifically lists “Mello e Lacerda de Brederode, de Elvas” as a branch of the Portuguese nobility.

There are also records in the Arquivo Histórico Militar for members of the Melo e Lacerda de Brederode family. For example, António Xavier de Melo e Lacerda de Brederode (born 1829) is recorded as a colonel, demonstrating the family’s continuing military associations into the 19th century.

MELLOS JOSÉS PALACE. Elvas UNESCO World Patrimony

The building stands in the historic centre, at the beginning of Rua de São Francisco, near the junction with Rua Tenente Passos Manuel. A local heritage source describes it as an 18th-century building with a ground floor and noble first floor, a prominent central balcony with wrought-iron railing, and six additional marble-framed windows.

One of its most distinctive features is the Mello coat of arms on the central pediment. It is topped by an eagle with outspread wings. A marble medallion on the corner reportedly bears the initials “A M” and the date 1760, providing an important clue to the building’s chronology.
