Janelas Verdes House 1905. Classified Art Nouveu Building

Building project by architect Artur Júlio Machado, from 1905, representing a high-quality example of residential architecture at the turn of the 20th century, classified as Property of Public Interest. (Imóvel de Interesse Público)

This four-storey building features, on its façade, an exuberant ornamentation of polychrome and relief tiles with geometric and vegetal Art Nouveau motifs, created by Viriato Silva.

The interior—both the staircase and the apartments—also displays remarkable tile decoration, including Art Nouveau, Hispano-Moorish-inspired, and even naturalistic styles. It was commissioned by Miguel José Sequeira, one of the owners of the Constância Ceramic Factory, where the tiles were produced.

This building depicts the entrance hall of a historic building, located in Lisbon, Lapa, featuring over 82 different styles of traditional azulejo tiles on the walls and ceiling. Pritzker Prize-winner designs EDP Headquarters in Lisbon

This project had to solve a kind of paradox, two forces pulling in opposite directions: on the one hand, it had to comply with a Masterplan that required continuity of the public space from the hills to the river (north-south direction) resulting in a splitting of the building’s mass into two linear volumes.

On the other hand, the building had to function as one single entity; so the 2 linear volumes had to be connected in the east-west direction threatening the north-south continuity of the public space. So, to respond to both forces simultaneously, it was folded the ground of the public space with a slight slope that complied with the hill-river continuity and then connected the two linear volumes under the highest point of the folded ground.

This artificial sloping ground offered the opportunity to solve another issue of the lot: being on the second row of Lisbon’s urban grid, the visual continuity towards the river was more theoretical than real.

The building of EDP across the street, even though as a general mass complied with the north-south continuity, at the pedestrian level blocked any perception of the river. A laid piece that is rested on the slope, cantilevered towards the river, gaining enough height to lean over the adjacent building, achieving a clear view of the Tejo. So, the square at the core of the complex is exclusively public.

Come see money! The Money Museum presents the theme of money, its history and evolution, in Portugal and the world. (Best Museum of the Year 2017)

The Money Museum, inaugurated in April 2016, is located in downtown Lisbon, in the former church of São Julião, and presents the theme of money, its history and its evolution, in Portugal and in the world.

There are many things to see and do in this Museum: you can donate a testimony, mint and print virtual coins and banknotes with your face, see under a microscope what banknotes are made of, and also exchange, interact and be inspired by stories from around the world.

The Money Museum also features a diverse cultural and educational program for all ages that, in an original and pedagogical way, allows the whole family to get involved.

BELÉM TOWER. Inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1983, the Belém Tower is an iconic symbol of the city of Lisbon and of Portugal worldwide, historically and artistically linked to the Jerónimos Monastery and the Portuguese Discoveries.

Built between 1514 and 1519 on a basalt outcrop some distance from the north bank of the river, it combines two distinct architectural models: the tall tower, in the style of a keep, with a medieval design, and the bastion, a modern military structure.

Beyond the building’s structure, it is the ornamental overload, the festive decoration in the Portuguese late-Gothic “Manueline” style, that reveals its construction during the reign of King Manuel I (1495-1521).

The royal heraldry, obsessively present, is mixed with diverse ornamental motifs, such as ropes, knots, and animals, not lacking elements of Moorish allusion. Of particular note is the presence, on the south façade of the tall tower, of the extensive balcony, a loggia , designed to accommodate the ostentatious court ceremonies that would certainly intensify upon the arrival and departure of ships.

Quinta da Regaleira located in Sintra, Portugal, is a historic estate built in the early 20th century by the millionaire António Augusto Carvalho Monteiro in collaboration with architect Luigi Manini.

It is well-known for its unique architecture including underground tunnels and initiation wells. Read on to learn about the mysterious history of this UNESCO World heritage site!

In 1997, the Sintra Town Council acquired Quinta da Regaleira and commenced extensive restoration efforts. After a decade of closure to the public, the estate opened its doors in June 1998, welcoming visitors to explore its architecture, gardens, and hidden symbolism.

The Portuguese Ministry of Culture classified Quinta da Regaleira as a property of public interest and it has been designated as a UNESCO world heritage site along with @palacionacionaldapena in Sintra.
