Hotel 1908, Avenida Almirante Reis

An emblematic building of early 20th-century Portuguese architecture, awarded the Valmor Prize in 1908, designed by the architect Adães Bermudes.

Its construction dates back to 1908, and its full rehabilitation began in 2016, designed by the atelier @pardalmonteiro_arquitetos .

The building, now known as “Hotel 1908,” is one of the landmark structures on Avenida Almirante Reis and stands out in the city’s skyline with its semicircular body, crowned by a large dome, imposing itself prominently on the corner where it is located. With a triangular floor plan configuration, it features an identical treatment on both façades.

Its exterior decorative language is characterized by eclecticism, bringing together Neo-Baroque elements visible in the dome and its ornamentation, as well as Art Nouveau elements evident in the polychromatic tile cladding—depicting peacocks and floral motifs—along with the stonework and the sinuous wrought-iron details featuring floral and animal motifs.

CASA DO ALENTEJO - The Magestic Club

Built possibly at the end of the 17th century, the building that today houses the @casadoalentejo.lisboa underwent major modifications at the beginning of the 20th century.

From its earlier history, it is known that it belonged to an aristocratic family — the Paes de Amaral (Viscounts of Alverca) — from whom it adopted the name and title of Palácio Paes do Amaral or Palácio Alverca.

At the beginning of the 20th century (1917–1919), it was leased to a company that transformed part of the old palace into the capital’s first casino — the Magestic Club.

The palace therefore underwent extensive renovation works under the direction of architect Silva Júnior, transforming it into the splendid building that has come down to us today.

Years later, the Magestic Club was renamed the “Monumental Club,” always seeking to attract customers to its luxurious gaming rooms or to the sumptuous parties held in the dazzling Hall of Mirrors.

By 1928, this phase of its life had already come to an end. In 1932, it was leased to the Grémio Alentejano, later renamed Casa do Alentejo, becoming the headquarters of the Alentejo Regionalist Association.

In 1981, it was purchased from the descendants of the Paes de Amaral family and became the heritage of all people from Alentejo.
